The Battle of (the bands) Algiers

The Embassy brought the band “Man kind is Obsolete” to Algeria to perform and conduct workshops with local rock musicians. I had never heard of them but they are apparently a favorite of the Ambassador’s son. Maybe, I need to turn him on to some local Wichita bands and get some of our friends out here! They decided to have a kind of battle of the bands, with the winner getting to open up for MKIO in California. The contest was held on Friday night. We decided to go and get dinner and take Guinevere with us. Since Friday is a holy day here, many restaurants are closed so we wandered around for quite a while and finally found a fast food place that is new called “City Burger” it was actually rather awful but we had an open bottle of wine with us from an earlier playdate (I am learning these are really for the parents to socialize). It is interesting here that drinking in public and just bringing your own booze to a restaurant actually feels more comfortable than in the US. No one really does it but no one cares at the same time.

Back to the music event though, the concert was held in an old theatre downtown that was rather nice. There was a poster on the outside for the movie “The Artist”, which we have wanted to see but the times were written on a piece of paper next to it saying 13h00 and 15h00 but no date. The crowd was sadly small but what they lacked in quantity, they made up for in quality! These dudes would have blended right into southside Wichita! Long nasty hair and slightly oversized band t-shirts. We only got to see the last band because of getting a little lost trying to find the place but the we were impressed. The lead singer was good when he actually new the words and I was charmed by the phonectic way that he seemed to try and sound out some of the verses to “Eye of the Tiger”. The absolute best part of the night though was when Guinevere started to rock out and imitate the young head banging moshers! It was so priceless and she was for sure the star of the night. Any reservations that we had about bringing her immediately faded when she began bouncing wildly in her chair. I hope the audience at the 9:30 club will be as welcoming to us when we can’t find a babysitter.
