public diplomacy

I have not mentioned to much about Mike’s activities mostly because I am rather self centered but also because he claims he that he plans to not look at the blog until after we leave. Hello-are you reading this now?

He did get to do something rather note worthy this past weekend so I’ll give him a little face time. Well, not real face time, in the picture you may be fooled that one of the blurry tall white guy figures must be him but I don’t think it is.  The wonderful photo did appear in an Algerian newspaper.

There was a surprise visit from 6 basketball coaches who belong to the One-on-One organization in Washington, DC.  These Ivy League pretty boys are not just any players…they play basketball on a regular basis with President Obama.  They were here for a Basketball Clinic funded by the US government but coordinated by the Algerian Embassy in Washington and the Algerian Ministry of Youth & Sports.  Mike was an official escort for them to the gym where they played and got to help do drills with the kids.  His French is better than mine but I still wondered if he had the vocabulary for such an activity and he said he just yelled “courez” and “rapidement!” or “run” and “faster!” I am sure they loved him.
